A day visiting Oxford & Swindon
After the long hiatus of Christmas and the New Year had finally come to an end, it was good to get back out on the road again. I had lined up plenty of calls in both Oxford and Swindon, but as usual I had some disappointments even before I had hardly started, when I was contacted on the way down by Pamela of Pazzazz Esocrts of Oxford, she indicated that she had suddenly become otherwise occupied, but that she would love to see me next time I was in the area. Meanwhile I made contact with Wendy the lady who is the receptionist for the Kitten Club, the one remaining private flat from the six in Oxford that I first listed in Parlour Guide Number Nine. This place has moved around a lot mainly between the Marston and Headington areas of the city and I turned up at the last address I had them down at, a semi in Marston, only to find they had moved back to near where they were first located, another flat near the famous Shark in the Roof, the object at the centre of a famous planning defeat for the town planners a decade or so ago. Having had various run ins with the planners in my time, it never fails to put a smile on my face to see this bizarre spectacle, a modest terraced house in Oxford with a model of the rear part of a full size shark sticking out of its roof.
They were originally located almost opposite the shark in a block of flats on the corner of London Rd. and New High St., but now occupy another flat a stone's throw or so away. The boss who apparently currently lives in Thailand, is curiously despite her distance away easily contactable and having rung Wendy on the way down, by the time I turned up, had indicated she was not interested in whatever I might have to offer, even without knowing what it was. I realised I was not going to make a sale, but I popped in to see Wendy and explained how I could get them a lot of good publicity at a reasonable price and left it at that. Wendy was impressed anyway. Two new flats had opened the last time I had been in the city, but they had already closed down, so I visited the town's two principle sex shops and having left books at both got down to the south of the city, where I rang Elle, a lady who only works evenings and weekends, since she has a full time 9 to 5 job in the Oxford Business Park. We met at a local pub and it turned out she wanted to thank me for having already brought her some business with my book, but since she was unclear as to how long she was going to continue working, we left things at that.
It was now on to Swindon and my first call here was at another individual working lady, a rather cute slim young brunette by the name of Abby. Where she lives in Swindon, there is a most curious phenomenon, in so far as vast areas of residential terraced houses just outside the town centre have the most bizarre parking restrictions with large tracts of streets only available for resident permit holders and people who stay for no more than five minutes!! How they expect anyone to get any business dealt with in that time God knows!! Then again there are always plenty of spaces to park in in these areas and not many parking wardens around, but it seems so petty and why anyone would want to park in these streets unless they were seeing someone there I cannot for the life of me understand.
Abby seemed to find me very amusing, finding it distinctly difficult to stop laughing at my comments, possibly because she finds it bizarre to find someone such as myself, who has such a matter of fact attitude to the sex industry and how people might promote themself in it. She assured me she should be listed as a five star lady and I pointed out that while she had had the odd good review, four stars were all I could give her until I knew more. Yes, she had a delightful body, but the best lookers were not always the best performers. She was however impressed by the book, but felt she was getting enough business already and did not need to spend money advertising. Recognising I was not going to make a sale, I left her then so she could go and get her nails done.
I tried ringing a few more Swindon calls that I had tentatively lined up, but without any success, so I visited the town's lone independent sex shop, the Exchange Bookshop in Gorse Hill. It is a bit downmarket and in the present economic circumstances, one is bound to wonder how long they will manage to keep going, but I found they have been around for some years now and had moved a few books since my last call. I then headed off to see my old friend Jody at her new location, a small ground floor studio flat in the Old Town area of the town. They had been located in a modern flat near the station, but it was costly and this new location was just as good for business and nowadays it is particularly important to keep one's overheads down.

Jody's is a niche market operation with now just three mature ladies and has proved very successful with a keen regular clientele, who invariably leave satisfied, provided they are not looking for an airhead of a bimbo to take care of them.
I now tried a couple more phone calls to other independent ladies, but when I again had no success decided if I was going to get back to the Midlands for my regular evening bridge club meeting, I had better get moving. And I duly got back in time for the meeting, which apart from one lot of players getting their cards mixed up went relatively well.
